What happens on the day

Every visit follows a clear process from visual inspection through to electrical meter testing, keeping disruption low for your household or business.

  • Initial walkthrough and inventory checkWe arrive on site, meet the property contact and walk through the rooms to gather or locate all portable electrical items, extension leads, battery chargers and plug-in equipment scheduled for inspection.
  • Visual inspection of plugs, flexes and casingsEach item receives a thorough check. We look for cracked outer casing, split wiring sheaths, bent pins, incorrect fuse ratings inside the plug, and signs of overheating or scorch marks around socket terminals.
  • Instrument testing on portable appliancesUsing calibrated test instruments, we measure earth continuity on earthed equipment and check insulation resistance between live conductors and external metalwork, verifying that internal protective barriers remain intact.
  • Immediate labelling and resultsEvery appliance is marked with an individual pass or fail sticker showing the date of inspection. We explain any item that failed the testing on the day so you can withdraw it from everyday operation straight away.

Common questions about PAT testing

Still have a question?

What items are included in a PAT test?

PAT testing covers electrical appliances that connect to the mains with a plug top. This includes kettles, microwaves, desktop computers, monitors, extension cords, vacuum cleaners, portable heaters and electric hand tools.

Is PAT testing legally required for landlords in Ferndown?

Landlords must ensure that electrical appliances supplied with a tenancy are safe to use. While the method of checking is not restricted to one specific system, regular PAT testing provides a clear, documented record that every supplied appliance has been examined and electrically tested.

What happens if an appliance fails the test?

If an item has broken casing, internal electrical insulation faults or damaged wiring, it receives a fail sticker and is taken out of service immediately. We point this out to you on the day so it is not used by staff or tenants.

Does PAT testing check the building wiring and sockets?

No. PAT testing examines portable plug-in equipment only. Testing for fixed wiring, wall sockets, light circuits and the fuse board or consumer unit is conducted under an Electrical Installation Condition Report, which is arranged separately.

How often should portable appliances be tested?

Testing frequency depends on the environment and how frequently the items are handled. Construction tools and heavy workshop equipment require frequent checks, whereas office IT hardware and rental property appliances typically operate on longer inspection intervals.
