What is PAT testing?
PAT testing stands for portable appliance testing. It involves inspecting and electrically testing equipment that connects to the mains supply through a plug. The process confirms whether items like kettles, power tools, extension leads and computers are safe to plug in and operate.
Which appliances require portable testing?
Any electrical item that plugs into a wall socket can be tested. This includes everyday workplace equipment such as monitors, desktop computers, printers, microwave ovens, toasters, workshop power tools, portable heaters and detachable extension leads.
What happens if an appliance fails an inspection or test?
If an item shows signs of damage or fails an electrical test, it is marked with a fail sticker and taken out of use immediately. We detail the reason for the failure on your register so you can choose whether to repair or replace the item.
Does PAT testing inspect the building fixed wiring?
No. Portable appliance testing only evaluates the equipment that plugs into electrical sockets. The fixed wiring, lighting circuits, switches and consumer unit within the building are evaluated separately under an electrical installation condition report.
How often should portable appliances be tested?
Testing intervals depend on how frequently the equipment is moved and the type of environment it is used in. Power tools on busy commercial sites require more regular testing than stationary computers in an office or white goods in a rented home.
