What happens on the day

Every visit follows an orderly process to ensure safe isolation, accurate fault diagnosis and neat electrical workmanship on your equipment.

  • Safe isolation and inspectionWe arrive on site, locate the relevant circuit and lock off the electrical supply safely. We record the nameplate details, check the condition of the motor enclosure, inspect cables for heat damage and confirm that the mechanical load turns freely.
  • Component testing and repairUsing calibrated test meters, we check phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth insulation resistance, winding resistance and capacitor condition. If an on-site repair is viable, we replace worn bearings, fit new capacitors or clean and re-terminate damaged leads.
  • Installation and alignmentWhere a new motor is required, we bolt the unit into position, ensure mechanical alignment with the driven shaft and terminate the supply conductors. We confirm that glands, earthing conductors and terminal links are fitted correctly for the voltage configuration.
  • Functional testing and certificationWe restore power, check for correct shaft rotation, measure running current under load and verify that overload protective devices operate at the specified trip threshold. Notifiable work receives appropriate electrical certification upon completion.

Frequently asked questions about motor repair

Still have a question?

What is the difference between single phase and three phase motors?

Single phase motors run on a standard 230 volt domestic or light commercial electrical supply and rely on start or run capacitors to begin rotating. Three phase motors operate on a 400 volt supply typically found in workshops, plant rooms and industrial units. Three phase motors do not require capacitors, produce higher starting torque and are generally more efficient for driving larger pumps, fans and machinery.

Why is my motor tripping the circuit breaker immediately on startup?

A motor that trips the circuit breaker instantly usually has an electrical short circuit, a break in winding insulation, or a seized mechanical component causing an extreme current draw. We isolate the motor and conduct insulation resistance testing to confirm whether the fault is inside the windings, along the supply cable, or within the starter contactor.

Do you repair motors on site or take them away?

We carry out on-site testing, capacitor replacements, bearing swaps, switchgear repairs and direct motor replacements during our visit. If a motor has severely burnt out windings that require specialist off-site rewinding, we disconnect and remove the motor so it can be handled by a rewind workshop, then return to reinstall and recommission it.

Will I receive an electrical certificate for motor installation work?

Where a new electrical circuit or new distribution switchgear is installed to supply a motor, an Electrical Installation Certificate is provided. For like-for-like motor swaps on existing circuits, we conduct verification and safety tests on the circuit and provide clear written records of the readings taken.

Is MX2 Electrical registered to carry out three phase electrical work?

Yes. MX2 Electrical is NAPIT registered and TrustMark accredited for both single phase domestic and three phase commercial electrical installations. We carry full public liability insurance to undertake electrical work in private homes, workshops, retail units and commercial premises.
