What happens on the day
Every motor visit follows a methodical electrical process to isolate the equipment, diagnose electrical faults and verify correct mechanical operation.
- Safe isolation and inspectionWe begin by locating the circuit at the distribution board, proving isolation with approved voltage indicators, and locking off the supply. We then record the nameplate data, check starter contactors, and examine the terminal box for thermal discolouration.
- Motor repair or replacementIf a unit requires renewal, we unbolt the existing frame, align the replacement drive, connect the incoming supply cables and torque all terminals. On repairable equipment, we renew starter capacitors, replace worn terminals, or fit replacement bearings.
- Rotation checks and electrical testingOnce reassembled, we energise the circuit to confirm the direction of shaft rotation, measure running amperage against full-load current ratings, and inspect earth continuity. All covers, seals and mechanical guards are secured before handover.

What is the difference between single phase and three phase motors?
Single phase motors operate on a standard 230 volt supply, typical in homes and small shops for pumps, garage openers and domestic extractor fans. Three phase motors run on a 400 volt supply, offering greater efficiency and torque for industrial machinery such as heavy compressors, hoists and machine tools.
Can a burnt out motor be repaired on site?
Minor issues like faulty starting capacitors, loose terminal connections, worn contactor points or damaged bearings can often be repaired on site. If the internal copper windings have suffered complete breakdown, the motor must either be exchanged for a new unit or sent to an off-site rewind facility.
Why does an electric motor trip the circuit when switched on?
A motor draws a heavy surge of current on startup. If the internal insulation has failed, a bearing has seized, or the circuit breaker is the wrong curve rating for inductive loads, the protection device trips instantly. We carry out insulation and winding resistance tests to identify the exact cause.
Will I receive an electrical certificate for motor work?
When we run a new dedicated circuit, install a new distribution board or make notifiable alterations to the installation, we issue an electrical installation certificate backed by our NAPIT registration. Routine component replacements on existing circuits are tested and recorded without needing statutory notification.
Are you registered and insured to work on commercial electrical systems?
Yes. MX2 Electrical is registered with NAPIT and TrustMark, and we carry two million pounds of public liability insurance. We work on both residential and commercial electrical systems in compliance with British Standard 7671.
