Consumer unit replacement across Christchurch
We serve Christchurch from our base in Poole.
What happens on the day
Replacing a consumer unit requires safe power isolation, neat circuit termination and comprehensive testing before the system is re-energised. We follow an orderly routine so you understand every stage of the work.
- Supply isolation and board removalWe isolate the power at the main electricity meter, verify that incoming cables are dead, and mark each circuit line. The old fuse carrier box is disconnected and removed cleanly from the mounting position.
- Mounting and connecting the new enclosureA non-combustible metal consumer unit is secured in place. Incoming meter tails and earthing conductors are terminated, followed by connection of each circuit onto correctly rated miniature circuit breakers and residual current devices.
- Testing and circuit identificationEvery circuit undergoes testing for insulation resistance, earth continuity and trip speeds before power is turned back on. We attach clear printed markers to the board cover so every switch indicates the exact area it supplies.

How long does a fuse board replacement take?
A typical domestic consumer unit replacement takes several hours to complete. Power is safely switched off while the old unit is taken down and the new metal enclosure is mounted. We reconnect and test each circuit individually before re-energising the system.
Will my power be turned off during the upgrade?
Yes, the main electrical supply must be isolated at the electricity meter while we disconnect the old fuse box and install the new unit. Once the new board and breakers are securely terminated, power is restored progressively as tests are completed.
Why should an old fuse box be replaced?
Old fuse boxes with rewireable fuse wire or early cartridge fuses do not offer modern residual current protection. Upgrading to a modern consumer unit protects against electric shocks, handles new electrical appliances safely and complies with current wiring standards.
Do I receive paperwork after the board is installed?
Yes. Consumer unit replacement is notifiable electrical work. Because MX2 Electrical is registered with NAPIT, we issue an Electrical Installation Certificate and submit the notification to building control, leaving you with full official records.
Can you install extra circuits on the new consumer unit?
Yes. When specifying a new board, we select an enclosure with adequate spare ways. This allows future electrical additions such as vehicle charging points, heat pumps, garden power or kitchen appliances to be connected without replacing the board again.
