For most domestic consumer unit installations, the main electrical supply is isolated for a few hours. We turn circuits back on as soon as they have been terminated, inspected and confirmed safe.
Do I need a new consumer unit if an EICR flags my old one?
An older fuse box with rewirable fuses or missing residual current protection will frequently be noted on an EICR. If the report identifies the board as lacking modern safety features, fitting an updated metal consumer unit resolves those findings.
Will a new metal consumer unit fit into my existing meter cupboard?
In most homes, modern enclosures fit into the original space. However, metal consumer units are often slightly deeper and wider than vintage fuse boxes. We assess cupboard dimensions prior to fitting to ensure adequate clearance around the lid.
What is the difference between rewirable fuses and modern circuit breakers?
Rewirable fuses rely on a strand of wire that melts when overloaded, requiring manual replacement. Miniature circuit breakers trip instantaneously using internal electromagnetic mechanisms and can simply be reset with a flick of a switch once a fault is cleared.
Do you provide electrical certificates after the board is fitted?
Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable electrical work. We issue an Electrical Installation Certificate and register the finished job through our scheme membership with NAPIT.
