What happens on the day
Every installation follows a structured process to isolate supplies safely, connect wiring cleanly and verify safety mechanisms before testing the water flow.
- Isolation and circuit inspectionOn arrival, we inspect the existing shower unit, water shut-off valve and electrical connections. We isolate the dedicated circuit at the consumer unit, test to verify the circuit is dead and confirm that the cable dimensions and ceiling pull cord switch can safely support the unit being fitted.
- Unmounting and unit fittingThe old shower unit is disconnected from the cold water supply and isolated electrical terminal block before being removed. We secure the new electric shower to the wall, align water pipework, terminate the live, neutral and protective earth conductors, and fit the new riser rail, hose and handset.
- Instrument testing and commissioningPower and water are restored so the shower can be tested through its complete cycle. We check that cold, warm and full heat settings function correctly, inspect pipe unions for leaks, and use calibrated test equipment to record earth fault loop impedance and verify RCD tripping times.

Can I replace my electric shower with a more powerful kilowatt model?
You can upgrade to a higher kilowatt model only if the dedicated electrical cable, pull cord isolation switch and consumer unit circuit breaker can carry the extra current. Moving from an 8.5kW unit to a 9.5kW or 10.5kW unit often demands a thicker cable to prevent overheating. We inspect your existing wiring before fitting the new unit.
Do I need a new consumer unit to install an electric shower?
A new consumer unit is not always necessary if your existing board has an available spare way, adequate overall capacity and proper RCD residual current device protection for bathroom circuits. If your current board lacks modern safety devices, we explain your options and provide a separate written price before any changes are made.
Is electric shower installation notifiable under building regulations?
Running a brand-new dedicated shower circuit from the fuse board into a bathroom is notifiable work. MX2 Electrical is NAPIT registered and TrustMark accredited, so we handle all necessary building regulations notifications for new circuits. Replacing an existing shower like-for-like on a sound circuit is generally non-notifiable.
What happens if my existing shower pull cord switch is heat damaged?
Electric showers draw high continuous current, which means loose terminals inside isolation switches can cause scorching over time. During our installation checks, we inspect the ceiling pull cord switch. If scorch marks or thermal degradation are found, we fit a heavy-duty replacement switch to keep the circuit safe.
Do you carry out wall tiling or plastering after replacing a shower unit?
Our service covers the complete electrical installation, water connection and mechanical mounting of the shower unit, riser rail and handset. Where a replacement unit has a different footprint from your old shower, existing screw holes or uncovered tile areas may remain visible. We do not undertake wall retiling, plastering or general decorative making good.
