Can I install battery storage without having solar panels?
Yes. Standalone battery systems can be installed to charge from the grid overnight using cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs. The stored power is then used during the day to run household appliances, cutting electricity costs without solar panels.
Where on my property can the battery be fitted?
Batteries are commonly placed in a garage, utility room, or well-ventilated loft with adequate structural weight capacity. Weather-rated external units can also be mounted directly onto an exterior wall.
How long does a battery storage installation take?
A typical domestic installation takes one to two days depending on cable runs and where your consumer unit is located. Power to your home is only turned off for a short period while the final electrical connections are made.
Do I need permission from the electricity network to install a battery?
Systems up to 3.68kW per phase generally fall under G98 rules, meaning we notify Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks within 28 days after commissioning. Larger capacity systems require prior G99 network approval, which we manage on your behalf.
Will battery storage keep my electricity running during a power cut?
Standard battery storage installations shut down when grid power cuts out for electrical safety reasons. If you require emergency power during an outage, an emergency power supply or specialised islanding switchgear must be incorporated into the installation.
