What happens on the day
Visits are organised to inspect the existing electrical circuit, mount the continuous running fan, and confirm air movement before signing off the installation.
- Circuit testing and safe isolationThe circuit supply is isolated at the consumer unit, followed by testing the incoming feeds, neutral and earth conductors at the wall spur or isolator.
- Mounting and duct connectionThe fan casing is secured to the wall or ceiling, connected to the external duct path, and wired into the local three-pole isolator.
- Setting trickle and boost ratesThe internal controls and humidity sensors are configured according to the room dimensions and normal moisture levels to ensure correct air turnover.
- Electrical certificationFinal testing checks earth continuity, insulation resistance and operation on boost before issuing a minor electrical installation works certificate.

What is the difference between a dMEV fan and an ordinary extractor?
A dMEV unit runs continuously on an ultra-low trickle speed to provide constant air changes in the room, automatically increasing to a boost speed when it detects high humidity or when triggered by the light switch. Standard intermittent extractors only turn on when triggered, leaving moisture in the room between uses.
Can a continuous running fan replace an existing bathroom extractor?
Yes. Provided there is an accessible live electrical feed and an external duct outlet, a continuous fan can be mounted in place of the old unit. We inspect the existing wiring, test the connections at the isolator, and install the new unit.
Do continuous running extract fans use a lot of electricity?
No. Modern dMEV units are designed with low-energy DC motors that consume minimal power while running on background trickle speed, making continuous operation very economical compared to frequent heavy venting.
Will I receive a certificate for the electrical work?
Yes. Altering or adding to a bathroom circuit is notifiable in domestic properties. MX2 Electrical is NAPIT registered and issues a minor electrical installation works certificate once the unit is fitted and tested.
Does the installation include drilling through external walls?
If an external opening already exists, we connect the duct directly to it. Where a new core hole through external brickwork is required, this can be carried out as part of the electrical visit and will be included in the project plan.
