What happens on the day

Every installation follows an orderly electrical procedure to verify circuit safety, secure external ducting and commission the unit.

  • Supply isolation and pre-installation checksWe isolate the existing fan circuit at the consumer unit, remove the existing fitting or faceplate, and test the conductors at the fused spur or isolator to confirm correct polarity, earthing and voltage.
  • Mounting, ducting and electrical connectionThe dMEV unit is securely fixed to the ceiling or wall, connected to short external ducting, and wired through an isolator switch. Wiring connections are terminated firmly to allow both continuous trickle operation and boost switching.
  • Commissioning and minor works certificationWe test both the background trickle speed and the boost trigger, check airflow at the internal grille, and complete a minor works certificate for the altered electrical circuit before leaving the property.

Frequently asked questions about dMEV installations

Still have a question?

What is the difference between a standard extractor fan and a dMEV unit?

A standard extractor fan only operates when triggered by a light switch or humidity sensor and turns off after an overrun period. A dMEV unit runs constantly at an ultra-low trickle speed, maintaining continuous airflow, and only ramps up to a higher speed when moisture levels increase.

Are dMEV fans noisy to run continuously?

Modern continuous extract units use efficient motors designed to run almost silently on their background trickle setting. When the unit boosts for higher humidity, it sounds similar to a standard extractor until the room dries, after which it returns to quiet trickle mode.

Can a dMEV fan replace an existing bathroom extractor?

Yes. If your bathroom already has an extractor fan connected to an intact electrical feed and an outside vent, a dMEV unit can usually be installed in the same position using the existing aperture and wiring.

Will I receive an electrical certificate for the installation?

Yes. Altering a fixed circuit to connect a new ventilation unit is notifiable work in domestic properties. We issue a minor works certificate under our NAPIT registration to confirm that the circuit has been tested and meets safety standards.

Do dMEV units consume a lot of electricity?

No. Continuous mechanical extract fans are built with low-wattage DC motors that consume minimal power on their trickle setting, typically using only a few watts of electricity during standard daily running.
