What happens on the day
Every installation follows a clear electrical process to ensure the new fan operates correctly on the circuit and exhausts moisture directly to the outside.
- Power isolation and wiring inspectionWork begins by safely isolating the electrical supply at the consumer unit. We test the live, neutral, and switched live connections at the fan isolator switch or fused connection unit before handling the existing fan.
- Mounting and duct connectionThe continuous dMEV unit is securely fixed to the ceiling or external wall. We connect the short run of extract ducting through the external wall opening and attach an exterior grille to protect against drafts and weather.
- Commissioning and testingOnce wired, power is restored to test trickle airflow and boost operation. We check that humidity sensors trigger correctly, confirm extract flow rates at the internal grille, and check that the trickle setting runs quietly.

What is a dMEV fan?
A dMEV fan, or decentralised mechanical extract ventilation unit, is a continuous running extractor fan fitted in wet rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. It runs constantly at an ultra-low trickle speed to extract stale, damp air, and automatically switches to boost mode when high humidity or steam is detected.
How does a dMEV fan differ from a standard bathroom fan?
A traditional extractor fan only switches on when the bathroom light is turned on or when triggered by an isolator, turning off shortly afterwards. A dMEV fan runs continuously twenty-four hours a day on a very low power setting, preventing moisture buildup before it has a chance to turn into condensation.
Can you install a dMEV fan in Parkstone flats and apartments?
Yes, we install continuous extract fans in flats and houses across Parkstone, including Ashley Cross and Lower Parkstone. As long as there is an accessible external opening for ducting to exhaust air outside the building, a dMEV fan can be fitted.
Do you provide the extractor fan or do I need to buy it?
We can provide and install a suitable continuous running extract fan, or fit a compatible unit that you have already purchased. We ensure the fan matches the room ventilation requirements and connects safely to the existing circuit.
Will I receive an electrical certificate for the installation?
Yes. Modifying fixed electrical wiring in a wet room is notifiable work. MX2 Electrical is NAPIT registered, and we issue a minor works electrical installation certificate upon completing and testing the fan installation.
