  • Electrical connection to an existing isolator or fused spur that is already in the room
  • Short extract ducting through an outside wall where the hole is already there or can be cut by us as part of the electrical visit
  • Boost setup for humidity or a light switch, as the fan model allows

What happens on the day

Every installation follows a clear electrical procedure to ensure safe operation, secure ducting, and neat cable connections.

  • Circuit isolation and safety testingWe isolate the power supply at the consumer unit and test the circuit at the local isolator switch or fused spur to confirm it is dead before taking down the old fan or handling existing cables.
  • Mounting and duct connectionThe fan casing is fixed securely to the wall or ceiling. We connect short ducting through an existing external wall core or vent opening, ensuring the pipework is properly aligned to discharge air outside.
  • Wiring and boost setupWe terminate the permanent live, switched live, neutral, and earth conductors into the unit. We then calibrate the internal humidity sensor or connect the switched live to the light switch so the boost mode activates properly.
  • Airflow checks and documentationThe unit is tested on both trickle and boost settings to confirm smooth airflow. We inspect the isolator switch operation and issue a minor works certificate for the altered electrical circuit.

Frequently asked questions about dMEV installations

Still have a question?

What is a dMEV ventilation unit?

A dMEV unit is a decentralised mechanical extract ventilation fan designed for continuous operation. Unlike standard bathroom fans that only switch on with the light, a dMEV fan runs constantly at a very low trickle speed to maintain gentle air exchange, automatically boosting to a higher extraction rate when humidity levels rise.

Do you supply the fan as part of the installation?

Yes, our installation covers both the supply and fitting of the continuous extract fan, along with connection to your existing electrical isolator and ducting. If you already have a specific fan model you wish to use, let us know and we can wire the fan you have purchased instead.

Will I receive an electrical certificate for the work?

Yes. Electrical work carried out in wet rooms and alterations to domestic circuits require certification. MX2 Electrical is NAPIT registered, and we issue a minor electrical installation works certificate upon completing the installation and testing.

Can a continuous extract fan replace an old bathroom fan?

In most cases, yes. If your current fan is fed by a suitable fused spur or isolator switch with a permanent live, neutral, and earth conductor, a continuous unit can be installed directly into the existing opening and connected to the existing duct.

Do you install continuous extract units in flats and apartments?

Yes, we install these units in both houses and flats across Christchurch, provided there is a direct vent path to the outside air through an external wall or dedicated ceiling duct.
