What happens on the day

Every installation visit follows a clear sequence from testing existing electrical circuits through to setting up humidity sensors and running test cycles.

  • Isolating and testing existing feedsWe safely disconnect electrical power, remove the existing wall or ceiling extractor, and test the circuit wiring, neutral and earthing at the local isolator to confirm the supply is sound.
  • Mounting and duct connectionsThe continuous unit is secured to the wall or ceiling opening, connected to the extract duct leading outside, and cabled into the three-pole isolation switch with correct polarities.
  • Commissioning and testing airflowWe set the background trickle speed and boost trigger levels, measure extract performance at the face of the grille, and restore circuit power to confirm smooth operation.

Questions about dMEV installations

Still have a question?

What is the difference between a standard extractor fan and a dMEV unit?

A traditional extractor fan only switches on when a light is turned on or a pull cord is operated, often shutting off before damp air is fully evacuated. A decentralised mechanical extract ventilation (dMEV) unit runs continuously at a very low trickle speed, quietly drawing moist air out of the room. When someone showers or humidity rises, sensors trigger the unit to boost to a higher extraction rate until moisture drops back to normal levels.

Can a dMEV fan be fitted into an existing extractor opening?

Yes. Most dMEV units are designed to replace standard 100mm bathroom fans directly. As long as the existing ducting leads to outside air and the wall aperture is the standard diameter, the unit can be mounted without modifying the building structure.

Do I receive an electrical certificate after installation?

Yes. Installing or altering fixed wiring for an extractor fan in a domestic wet room requires formal documentation. We issue a minor electrical installation works certificate under our NAPIT registration upon completion of testing.

How much electrical power does a continuous extract fan consume?

Continuous running dMEV fans use low-energy DC motors designed to operate 24 hours a day at minimal electrical draw. On standard trickle speed, they consume only a few watts of electricity, making running costs very low over a full year.

Can you install dMEV fans in rental flats as well as houses?

Yes. We fit dMEV units in both flats and houses throughout Wimborne Minster, provided there is an unobstructed duct run expelling air directly outside. Continuous ventilation is particularly helpful in rental accommodation to control condensation.
