What happens on the day

Every installation follows a clear process to check the existing circuit, secure the fan unit and verify that extraction rates work correctly before completing the electrical records.

  • Circuit isolation and connection checksWe isolate electrical power to the room at the consumer unit, inspect the existing fused spur or local fan isolator switch, and check live, neutral and earth conductors before mounting any new hardware.
  • Mounting the fan and connecting ductworkThe dMEV unit is fixed firmly to the ceiling or wall opening, attached to the external duct run, and wired into the local isolator switch with the correct permanent and switched supplies.
  • Setting trickle and boost ratesWe configure the unit according to room size, setting the continuous trickle rate and setting up the boost trigger, whether operated by internal humidity sensors or the bathroom lighting switch.
  • Airflow verification and certificationWe test that air extracts freely to the exterior terminal, test electrical safety characteristics on the altered circuit, and prepare a minor works certificate for your installation files.

Frequently asked questions about dMEV ventilation

Still have a question?

What is a dMEV fan and how does it operate?

A dMEV fan stands for decentralised mechanical extract ventilation. Unlike standard intermittent extractors that only turn on alongside a room light, a dMEV fan runs constantly at a low, quiet trickle speed to extract stale air. When bathing or showering causes humidity to spike, an integrated sensor or switched live automatically speeds the fan up to boost mode until moisture levels fall.

Can a dMEV fan replace an existing bathroom extractor fan?

Yes, provided the existing electrical circuit and duct path to outside air are intact. We remove the old extractor, test the supply wiring at the isolator, and mount the continuous fan into the wall or ceiling opening. If the wiring needs altering or a local isolator switch is absent, we adapt the circuit accordingly.

Will I receive an electrical certificate after installation?

Yes. Altering electrical circuits in special locations such as bathrooms and shower rooms requires formal documentation. As a NAPIT registered business, MX2 Electrical issues a minor works certificate upon completing the installation, confirming that earthing, wiring and safety devices comply with regulations.

Do you install continuous extract fans in flats across BH22?

We install dMEV units in both flats and houses throughout the BH22 area, including Ferndown town centre, Tricketts Cross and West Parley. The room must have an accessible route for short ducting through an outside wall or existing ceiling vent to discharge humid air externally.

How noisy is a continuous running extractor fan?

Modern dMEV units are engineered to operate almost silently on continuous background trickle speed. You will hear an increase in airflow sound when the fan switches to boost mode during showering, but the unit automatically drops back down to whisper-quiet trickle mode once humidity clears.
