What happens on the day

Every installation follows methodical testing routines to verify cable safety, correct duct alignment and quiet running before any certificate is completed.

  • Supply isolation and circuit testingWe isolate the power at the consumer unit, remove the old extract grille or fan casing, and test the live, neutral and earth conductors at the local isolation point to verify supply health.
  • Mounting and outside ducting connectionThe continuous unit is secured to the ceiling or wall structure and sealed against the extract duct. Where a core hole already exists, we check the external gravity flap or louvred cowl to ensure clear airflow.
  • Commissioning trickle and boost flow ratesWe set the internal dip switches or sensor dials to establish the steady background trickle and calibrate the boost trigger, whether activated by ambient relative humidity or a switched light feed.
  • Certification handoverBefore cleaning the work space, we measure air draw, log circuit readings and generate the minor electrical works paperwork confirming the alterations adhere to current UK regulations.

Frequently asked questions about dMEV installations

Still have a question?

What makes a dMEV fan different from a regular bathroom fan?

A dMEV or decentralised mechanical extract ventilation unit runs continuously at a very low, quiet speed to maintain constant air exchange. When somebody showers or humidity rises, an internal sensor automatically increases the fan speed to purge the steam before returning to background trickle.

Will a continuous extract fan use a lot of electricity?

Modern dMEV fans use low-wattage direct current motors designed specifically for continuous operation. When running on trickle mode, they consume very little power, making them economical to run all year round.

Do you provide electrical certificates for fan installations?

Yes. Altering electrical circuits in domestic bathrooms and kitchens requires appropriate certification. As a NAPIT registered business, MX2 Electrical issues a minor electrical works certificate for the work completed.

Can you install continuous ventilation in flats as well as houses?

Yes. We install dMEV systems in flats, apartments and houses across the area, provided there is an accessible external duct run through the wall or ceiling void to vent air directly outside.

What happens if my existing fan wiring is broken or unsafe?

Before installing the new fan, we test the existing supply and isolation switch. If we locate damaged cables or a missing earth, we explain the fault clearly and can trace the issue using our standard labour rate before mounting the new unit.
