dMEV installation across Bournemouth
We serve Bournemouth from our base in Poole.
What happens on the day
Visits are planned to replace or fit extract units neatly, checking the electrical supply and confirming airflow before completing the installation.
- Testing the existing circuit and isolatorBefore mounting any hardware, we isolate the supply and test the wiring at the fan isolator switch or fused connection unit. We verify the permanent live, switched live, neutral and earthing arrangements to ensure the supply meets current electrical regulations.
- Mounting the unit and connecting ductingThe unit is secured to the wall or ceiling, aligning with the external duct path. We connect rigid or flexible ducting to the external grille, ensuring clean connections so air exhausts outside freely without backdraughts entering the living space.
- Commissioning flow rates and issuing certificationOnce wired, we adjust the trickle and boost speeds to suit the room dimensions and test the humidity sensors. As a NAPIT registered business, we carry out all dead and live tests on the modified circuit and supply a minor works electrical certificate.

What is the difference between an ordinary extractor fan and a dMEV fan?
An ordinary extractor fan only switches on when the room light is turned on or a pull cord is operated, turning off shortly after. A decentralised mechanical extract ventilation unit runs continuously at a very low trickle speed, quietly clearing moisture all day, and automatically boosts to a higher extraction rate when humidity rises.
Can a dMEV fan replace my existing bathroom fan directly?
Yes. If your current extractor fan is mounted on an outside wall or ducted to the outside with an existing three-pole isolator switch and wiring in place, a dMEV unit can generally be fitted directly in the same location.
Do continuous running fans consume a large amount of electricity?
No. Modern dMEV units use low-wattage direct current motors designed specifically for continuous operation. The trickle mode uses minimal power, keeping running costs very modest over the course of an entire year.
Will I receive an electrical certificate after the installation?
Yes. Altering or adding wiring for an extractor fan in a bathroom or wet room requires electrical certification. As a NAPIT registered contractor, MX2 Electrical issues a minor works electrical certificate upon completion of testing.
Can continuous extract ventilation be installed in flats without lofts?
Yes. Units can be wall-mounted and ducted directly through an external wall, making them well suited for ground-floor or intermediate flats where loft space is not available.
